How can I make string from wool without a spinning wheel?
I need to make some string from wool however I don't have a spinning wheel. I've been trying to figure out how to use a technique called reverse wrapping but I don't understand any of the explanations I've found.
Both answers are correct, and I love to spin on my drop spindles.
However, if you are just making a short length for a project, the hand spinning will probably be easier. It helps if you use a crochet hook in one hand. Hook some of the wool in the hook, and then slowly stretch the carded wool and turn the crochet hook at the same time. When the yarn feels like it has enough twist in it to hold together, wrap it around the shaft of the hook and keep going. When you have twice the length you want, tie one end of the yarn to a chair back or doorknob, and walk backwards holding the other end until the yarn is taut. Hang the crochet hook in the very center, and then slowly walk back towards the other end of the yarn. As you release the tension on the yarn, the hook will turn, creating a plied yarn. When you get to where both ends are touching, tie a knot in them, and the yarn should stay together and twisted.
