Wood Carving

I live in miami and i need to know where to buy carving wood.?
I'm just an amateur in wood carving but I want to start. would anyone know what type of store i could find it in. lumber stores usually sell gigantic pieces of wood and art supply stores sell too small of wood and not the right type that i think is good. I'm looking for soft, easy to carve wood in Miami. anyone have any suggestions?
Basswood and Butternut are great woods to learn carving on. They are easy to carve and take detail well. Basswood should be available in craft stores.
For any type of wood, depending on what size carving you are doing, the internet is a great resource. People from all over sell wood, many sized ready to carve and very reasonably priced. You can do a search for the particular wood you'd like to try (i.e. "basswood carving blank" or just "wood carving blank") Ebay is also a good source for carving woods and tools.
My favorite way to obtain carving material is to check in with local arborists and tree service business. They will often give away small pieces or cut-offs or sell you a large piece that can be cut to the size you want. They get all types of local woods that lumberyards and craft stores are not likely to have and branches, limbs, etc... may have an interesting shape to them, or there may be a piece with fantastic grain patterns, that gives you ideas or motivation to make a particular item.
